It’s estimated that 1 in 10 people suffer from depression, and many more suffer from daily stress. Affirmations can help you retrain your brain to think positive thoughts. The great thing about affirmations is that anyone, young or old, can use them to change attitudes and enhance overall mental well-being.

What are affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that you repeat to yourself. They’re used for all kinds of things, including self-improvement. It’s a form of self-care, but for your mental health. Once practiced, it can have a positive domino effect on your self-esteem and outlook in life.

For example, affirmations can help you stop smoking or lose weight. Were you trying to change a habit? Affirmations can be used as a way to retrain your brain to think differently about it. If you want to quit smoking, for instance, you might repeat this affirmation: “Each time I resist the urge to smoke, my confidence in my ability to quit grows.”

Can daily affirmations have a positive effect?

Affirmations are powerful tools. They are helpful to reprogram a thought process that’s not serving you well and help you build the belief system necessary to improve your mental health and well-being, achieve happiness or success, or improve your life overall.

You may have heard of affirmations and been a bit skeptical, but it’s important to remember that all thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and expectations begin with words. Our subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between something we say out loud that we do not believe and something we say silently that we do believe.

Affirmations have been proven effective in studies of brain function. For example, research from the National Institute of Health found that repeating positive affirmations could lead to changes in the areas of the brain associated with self-control and emotional regulation. The researchers concluded that positive affirmations helped people feel more powerful and motivated. This is why affirmations are so popular among people trying to make changes in their lives.

On anxiety and affirmations

Anxiety is a feeling of fear, nervousness, and worry spontaneously or when you think about past, present, or future events. This can make everyday problems feel like they’re too hard to handle. If you’ve ever had an anxiety attack, you know how quickly one can come on — unannounced. You might be in the middle of doing something and suddenly experience chest pain, have a hard time breathing, and feel like you’re going to pass out.

The idea of getting better is scary because you don’t know if it will ever happen. When someone is struggling with stress and anxiety and looking for a way to get better, using affirmations can be a helpful tool to calm an anxious mind and take control of your emotions.

Affirmations can be an excellent way to address anxiety issues. When said affirmations are thoughtful and repeated in a gentle, comforting tone, they can become powerful methods for soothing your mind, calming your body, and bringing peace into your mental health and life.

Keep in mind that this is just one way to deal with anxiety — by challenging your anxious thoughts using positive affirmations for an anxious mind. You can repeat these affirmations (you can also create your own!) to yourself repeatedly until they sink into your subconsciousness and begin to change your attitudes about yourself and the world around you.

Letting go of your anxiety and opening yourself up to a life full of joy and freedom is easier said than done, especially for people who have suffered greatly because of anxiety or had their quality of life affected. There are no clear shortcuts on how to overcome anxiety fast. The easiest and most accessible way to overcome anxiety is to change your inner dialogue.

Write a journal, meditate, or speak your affirmations after a series of deep breaths. Whatever method you choose to use affirmations, do it as consistently as possible and commit to the positive thoughts you’re planting.
