There are hundreds of reasons why you should start a freelancing business. Maybe you’re tired of working for somebody else’s success, or you dream of having the freedom of being the captain of your fate and destiny.

Whatever reasons you have in mind, don’t let your worries hinder you from pursuing your ambitions. It will be challenging, frustrating, overwhelming, and it’ll take time, but once you get your foot in the door of freelancing, the rewards will be remarkable.

Being a freelancer allows you to work at your own pace with the consideration of meeting the standards and deadlines of your clients. It gives you the liberty to become a digital nomad—working while experiencing the world.

Freelancing work is so diversified that there are plenty of opportunities for you. A study shows that gig-based work is on the rise, so you don’t have to worry about not finding a job that best suits you.

What is freelancing?

Freelancing is broad, vague, and has different meanings to different people. But, to make it simple, freelancing is a way to earn money on a per-job or per-project basis. It’s usually short-term—allowing you to work for multiple clients and companies simultaneously.

Although freelancers take work from companies, they are ultimately self-employed. They’re still required to sign contracts and should comply with payment agreements. Some payments are per-project, per hour, or day.

There is also a retainer arrangement where a client retains the right to your time and services whether they use them or don’t. Freelance retainers are typically paid on a weekly or monthly basis.

The average freelancing income is $20-$28 per hour, but it can vary depending on skill level and responsibilities.

Unlike traditional employees, freelancers are liable for planning their work hours, tracking their time per project per client, billing their clients, and paying their employees and business taxes.

Statistically, freelancing contributed $4.2 trillion to the global economy, of which 50% of the workforce are 18-22 years old, and 44% are 23-38 years old.

More and more people are drawn to freelancing because they can work independently and collaborate with people and projects that resonate with them. It also gives people an opportunity to earn more while working in a flexible time and location.

Freelancers get to hone their skills because they have more free time to take workshops, seminars, and courses which allows them to grow creatively as an individual. They get to experiment with their craft and reach for new horizons without the limitations of working for a single company.

Here is a list of jobs in freelancing:

How to start freelancing with no experience?

Becoming a freelancer from scratch is not impossible. Challenging, yes, but you need to get in the right mindset if you want to make a career out of it.

First, you should invest in your passion and skills to make it marketable and profitable because the key to freelancing is to master a high-demand craft. You can do this by taking online courses and workshops.

Secondly, build credibility by creating a portfolio that exhibits and highlights your best-published work. You don’t have to include everything in your portfolio, but rather, select the top-rated projects relative to where you are applying. You may offer free services if you’re new to freelancing to build your reputation.

Thirdly, sign-up with the right freelancing platform to find clients and market your services. Freelancing is competitive, so make your profile unique to stand out from the crowd.

Fourthly, offer the right price because if you charge too much, clients may back out from the deal, and at the same time, if your fee is too low, chances are you might not get compensated right for the effort you’ve made.

To know how much you should charge your clients, discuss with other freelancers who are offering the same services, or you may conduct market research on the internet. Don’t forget to include your taxes, other expenses like paid app subscriptions, and employees if you have any.

Finally, submit your application letters and proposals. Write unique proposal letters tailored to each client because they’ll know if it’s a copy-paste template. Devote some time to think about what you want to say to persuade your clients to hire you over other applicants.

Once you’ve got the job, don’t give your clients mediocre services. Instead, exceed their expectations because they’ll likely tell their network about your work and land more jobs.
